Abstract:

Scientific paper writing is a basic skill for the postgraduate students in the fields of instrumentation and measurement. However, these skills are rarely trained in the stage of undergraduate study. Hence, it is necessary to teach and train the students to make them successfully publish their original works. This study investigates an immersive case teaching method to help the students improve their skills in paper writing. The students will finish an article that ready for submission, and the paper submission procedure is simulated, and they will act as different roles such as editor and reviewer in the teaching parts. These immersive cases will help the student review and refine their work from different aspects. This study is expected to improve the students' theoretical and practical ability of scientific paper writing, along with the interests and ability of scientific research.

I. Introduction

Scientific paper writing is one of the core courses for graduate students in majors of science and engineering [1], [2]. Paper writing is a systematic work that including literature searching and analysis, problem summary and method proposing, experiment conduction and data analysis, text and figure editing, preparation for paper submission, paper revision and reviewer response, and proof checking and publication. These skills are rarely trained in the stage of undergraduate study [3]. Hence, it is necessary to teach and train the students to make them successfully publish their original works. Nowadays, majority of the related courses use the textbooks and PowerPoint slides to introduce the detailed procedures for publishing a scientific paper. Specially, the typical parts of a scientific paper, such as introduction, method, experiment, data analysis, discussion, and conclusion, will be introduced to the students [4], [5]. However, as the students have not written a paper before, they may have difficulty in understanding how to apply this knowledge to practice [6].
