Abstract:

This paper proposes an internet of things (IoT) for monitoring and controlling of induction motor using nine level cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter. Induction motor can be controlled and monitored in real time remotely using IoT. Nine level cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter is used to control the induction motor which has low total harmonic distortion (THD). Cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter can produce nearly sinusoidal voltage thus reduces the THD. As the result, a high-performance speed control of induction motor is obtained so that the induction motor produces a high response. An experimental is set up and experimental results are demonstrated and discussed in the paper.

I. Introduction

Inverter has been widely used for induction motor speed control using either scalar or vector control techniques. In application, inverter might generate significant total harmonics distortion that lower the efficiency of induction motor, mainly due to the output of inverter is no longer pure sinusoid. To overcome this problem, high frequency switching pulse width modulation (PWM) is applied to the inverter [1]–[3]. The output of inverter which use high frequency switching PWM is nearly sinusoidal that makes speed of induction motor achieves high response. High frequency switching PWM inverter needs SiC MOSFET which is expensive and rarely available at the developing countries market. To overcome this problem, multilevel inverter is used to control the speed of induction motor, such as cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter (CHMI). CHMI reduces the amount harmonics and produces nearly sinusoidal output. Multilevel inverter has been widely used for power conversion devices in industrial applications. Multilevel inverter can also be used in the grid-connected systems, uninterruptible power supply (UPS), electric vehicles, and flexible alternating current transmission systems (FACTS) [4].
