Fabrication of Multimode Polymer Optical Waveguide Based Splitter by the Mosquito Method and Investigation of Its Signal Splitting Ratio

In this paper, multimode Y-branched waveguides with low insertion losses are designed and fabricated applying our original fabrication method of polymer optical waveguides named the Mosquito Method, and then, light splitting ratios of the fabricated Y-branched waveguides are investigated for application to DEMUX devices.

I. Introduction

With the development of Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI), further progress of high-performance computers (HPCs) is required for high-speed processing of huge amounts of digital data. Optical interconnect technologies are attracting attention in response to the rapid increase in data traffic. Multimode optical fiber (MMF) links have already been introduced to the areas between racks and boards. For further high-speed data transmissions, wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) [1] technologies are highly anticipated to be introduced even in short-reach MMF links. If the WDM is introduced into the on-board links, further progress of HPC performance can be expected. Meanwhile, the introduction of polymer optical waveguide based optical wiring is also attracting attention for on-board links, where high-density wiring is required.
