Dual Sided Data Dense 25-bit Chipless RFID Tag

This article presents a 25-bit dual sided, passive chipless RFID tag. The novelty of research relies on the concept of utilizing ground area of tag to incorporate alternating metals and slits in reference to the structure on top of the substrate, hence yielding high code density. Compared to previous latest research, the structure and data capacity are significantly improved. The tag has been designed and analyzed on low-cost FR-4 substrate along with copper as radiator to label up to $2^{25}$ number of unique objects in frequency band of 4.5-12.5 GHz while staying in 27 $\mathrm{x}12.5\text{mm}^{2}$ dimensions. This paper yields pathways towards wireless tracking of things via battery-less passive miniaturized transponder.

I. Introduction

Chipless Radio frequency identification (RFID) involves wireless tracking of objects without utilization of integrated chip (I C) along with battery free identification system. RFID being one of the enabling technologies for internet of things (loT), holds a quite simple working principle with minimal power utilization [1]: incident RF interrogator signal is showered towards the tag leading to current generation on the surface of tag as a result the transponder re-transmits the signal with encoded information of tag attached to the object.
