I. Introduction
Security and safety in smart cities is one of the top priority for ensuring 24h surveillance. Manual perimeter observation using patrolling by security guards is expensive, inefficient and ineffective in this technological era. Physical reconnaissance missions are dangerous, especially in hostile environment where improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and landmines may be present. There are multiple types of embedded robotics platform for the ground, air and underwater missions [1]. These automated systems are found in multiple applications including restaurants automation, bio inspired surveillance systems, robot flocks to name few [2–7]. Moreover, a lot of effort is made in powering up these robots using renewable resources for sustainable operation [8, 9]. In a robot swarm these embedded systems are connected over a network using secure communication protocols for exchanging mission related information [10–12]. Existing video surveillance systems commonly utilize a single unit of Remotely-Piloted Aircraft (RPA) deeming it ineffective and risk-worthy in case it’s compromised. Continuous 24/7 surveillance for safety and security is a difficult job and contains chances of error in case of any negligence. Real-Time video transmission also means that no data is stored on the drone but rather it is transmitted directly, hence there’s no danger of retrieving the data or intelligence falling into enemy hands. This design guarantees continuous video surveillance, with fully scripted missions which can be planned on offline maps in applications including crops monitoring, area surveillance and remote sensing [13].
