An oriented-dependence-microlens (ODM) fabricated by automatic grinding and fusion techniques is proposed. The ODM can be visually surface-feature aligned for high tolerance coupling lasers to polarization-maintaining-fibers (PMFs). The 3-dB coupling efficiency and polarized-extinction-ratio (PER) angular tolerances of the ODM were obtained as high as ± 16°. Furthermore, the 1-dB coupling and PER ...Show More
A cost-effective differential-mode packaging of the TO-46 VCSEL module is proposed. The optimal bonding-wire and package solution have been demonstrated through frequency-domain and time-domain simulations. The differential-mode modulation bandwidth of the VCSEL module of above 21 GHz is achieved and a clearly opening eye diagram of 25 Gbit/s is observed. The electrical characterization of the VCS...Show More
An 86-mm in length 13.5-μm core diameter Cr4+:YAG double cladding crystal fiber(CDF) was performed in a 1550-nm 40-Gb/s error free data transmission system for eye diagram and BER studies.Show More
A passive mode-locking scheme in fiber laser using single wall carbon nanotube (SWCNT) or graphene as saturable absorber (SA) were demonstrated. Stable soliton-like pulses with pulsewidth of 418 fs and spectral linewidth of 6 nm using SWCNT and pulsewidth of 648 fs and spectral linewidth 3.88 nm using graphene as SA were achieved in mode-lock Er-doped fiber ring laser.Show More
A low-cost differential-end TO-46 VCSEL module is proposed and the electrical performance is demonstrated through frequency-domain and time-domain simulations. The modulation bandwidth achieves 29.18-GHz and a 25-Gb/s eye diagram is clearly shown.Show More
We present to improve the fluorescence intensity of Cr4+:YAG crystalline fibers. The difference of dopant oxidation state results in variation of ESCA peaks and helps to identify the sites in which it takes place.Show More
This study investigates the optical characteristics of Ce:YAG - dopant in low-temperature glasses whose glass transition temperatures are around 400°C. The quantum efficacy of 4wt% Ce:YAG doped glass is about 51%.Show More
By the shape parameter and scale parameter of Weibull eq, MTTF could be obtained to provide clear values for comparison and understanding. In this study, glass material exhibits about 7 times better in lumen loss at 150°C.Show More
A passive mode-locking fiber laser was demonstrated by using polyurethane-dispersed graphene as the saturable absorber (SA). The result showed that laser pulses with 5nm spectral bandwidth and pulse width about 1ps at wavelength 1560nm were demonstrated. This demonstration indicates that graphene can be a potential material for passive mode-locker for ultrafast laser.Show More
An auxiliary sapphire tube assisted to alleviate the fluctuation of the heating power was used in the CDLHPG system for fabricating the more uniform 10-µm-core crystal fibers, the improved core uniformity was demonstrated.Show More
A three-dimensional model of electrical performances to substantiate the coaxial TO-can laser module by using the calculated S-parameters from HFSS software is developed. The simulation data is compared with the measured data and shows a good consistency.Show More
Diffraction property of cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) grating has been theoretically and experimentally investigated. The experimental result is in good agreement with the Raman-Nath theoretical diffraction probed by a polarized beam in various polarization states. The dependence on the wavelength and the polarization creates a possibility for externally modulating the CLC device.Show More
Wavefront measurements with large dynamic range on high-power diode lasers are demonstrated. The wavefront sensor exhibited a large dynamic range of π/2 to -π/2 and high accuracy of the wavefront slope angle of 0.05 degree. The result of this study may provide an accuracy method for measuring the wavefront distributions of the diode lasers and the light sources with large divergence angles, such a...Show More
The high-power phosphor-based white-light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with different thicknesses and concentrations of silicone YAG phosphor after thermal aging at 150 degree C and 500 hours are studied experimentally. The results showed that the lumen loss and chromaticity (CIE) blue shift of the high-power white-light LEDs increased as the silicone YAG phosphor thickness and concentration increased. ...Show More
A 2.5 Gbps optical transceiver module fabricated by ionic liquid (IL)-dispersed multi-wall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) composites is demonstrated. In comparison with shielding effectiveness (SE) measurements without dispersion, IL-dispersed MWCNT composites exhibited high SE of 40∼46 dB at lower weight percentage of MWCNTs. Ionic charge force and alkyl groups interaction in the IL-MWCNT hybrid solutio...Show More
A new scheme with fewer components and shorter birefringent-crystal length for an optical interleaver using a ring cavity is proposed. A wide 0.5dB passband (0.91 ×bandwidth), a large 25dB stopband (0.78×bandwidth), and a high channel isolation (45dB) are obtained.Show More
Periodic surface plasmon-enhanced diffraction effect in cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) grating is demonstrated. The CLC grating is a periodic structure and results in the excitation of a periodic surface plasmon. The surface plasmon-enhanced diffraction effect may be important in nano-optics applications.Show More
A new architecture with less components for an optical interleaver using a ring resonator is proposed. A wide 0.5 dB passband (0.725 times bandwidth), a large 25 dB stopband (0.725 times bandwidth), and a high channel isolation (36 dB) are demonstrated.Show More
A high electromagnetic immunity and low-cost plastic package for a 10-Gb/s optical transceiver module is developed by using a woven carbon-fiber epoxy composite (WCEC). The WCEC package with a thickness of 1.0 mm and 4.8% carbon fiber has a shielding effectiveness (SE) performance of 60 dB at 10 GHz as the package is grounded to the system ground, and the SE can reach approximately 38 dB for the r...Show More
The high-performance and low-cost 10Gbps coaxial DFB laser module packaging by conventional TO-Can materials and processes are developed and fabricated. The laser module has a built-in matching resistor to reduce the resonant phenomenon.
