K/Ka Band High Gain Antenna with Shaped Beam for HEO Satellite

A K/Ka band dual band high gain horn antenna with shaped beam for HEO satellite has been developed for K/Ka band TT&C. The horn geometry uses both horizontal and vertical corrugations liner control profile with dual-depth vertical corrugations. The geometry of the horn is optimized to have maximum Edge of Coverage (EoC) within ±16° at all frequencies of interest. The measured results show that the EoC gain is more than 12.9 dBi and 13.1 dBi in EoC region at both K and Ka band respectively. The antenna has broad application prospects in HEO satellite.

I. Introduction

Compare with other orbit satellites, the HEO satellite has higher difficulty in precise orbit determination, such as few GNSS satellites can be seen, the tracking station is located in a relatively small area because the satellite orbit height is about 36000 km. The K/Ka band was the best method could be used for precise orbit determination, ranging and as backup method for S band TT&C for HEO satellite [1], In this paper, a single dual-band horn design covering both K and Ka band is described.
