Performance analysis of an inductive wireless power transfer system applied for electric vehicles considering operating limits

The steady-state performance of an inductive wireless power transfer system is studied in this paper based on fundamental mode analysis. Operating limits of the off-board power electronics components are taken into consideration based on which a study is performed to analyze the effects of operating frequency and magnetic coupling condition on power transfer capability of the system. Simulation results are provided to illustrate the influence of the aforementioned limits on the operation of a sample wireless battery charging system, which is designed to deliver 6.7 kW power at 420 V DC nominal output voltage to the high voltage traction battery of electric vehicles.

I. Introduction

The latest advances in power electronics and converters, particularly in the area of wide band-gap devices, have paved the way for adoption of highly efficient, compact, high power and reasonably cost effective battery charging solutions for electric vehicles, which has facilitated increasing deployment of electric vehicles in the transportation fleet.
