A Microwave Dielectric Resonator based Sensor for Detecting both Linear and Angular Displacements

Authors propose a microwave dielectric resonator (DR) based displacement sensor for detecting both linear and angular displacements. To enable this, a cylindrical dielectric resonator loaded with a metal strip is coupled to a 50
$\Omega$
open ended microstrip line. For this circuit, the magnitude of reflection coefficient
$(\vert \mathrm{S}_{11}\vert)$
at the microstrip port is sensitive to both the linear and angular displacements of the DR with respect to the open end of the line. Both numerical simulation and measurements are carried out to demonstrate the feasibility of the sensor. The proposed sensor provides 17 dB/mm sensitivity in 0–2 mm range, and -3.5 dB/mm in 2–10 mm range. For the same, the angular displacement sensitivity is 0.45 dB/°over the range of 0-90°.
