Analysis of Electrical Stress Performance Between Four Different Types of Liquid Insulation on QuickField Software

Electricity is often regarded as a fundamental requirement of modern society, serving as the backbone of economic prosperity and social well-being. High voltage and current create substantial electromagnetic fields, which necessitate specific care for individual and environmental safety and might even interfere with the functionality of other electrical equipment in direct range. The exchange between device size and electrical stress in the insulator is a particular issue in the design of high voltage equipment. The electric field is linearly proportional to the gap distance between the electrodes and the breakdown voltage increases exponentially as the gap distance increases for various air densities and atmospheric factors observed. Hence, this study focuses on the behavior of electrical field strength around the respective electrodes using Finite Element Analysis (FEA). The QuickField software uses the Finite Element Method (FEM) to model the electric field intensity around two distinct types of electrodes which is a needle-plane electrode, sphere-plane electrode, and mushroom-plane electrode. The developed method will produce the electric field distribution and strength where tabulation and analysis of data were made. From the result, it can be concluded that the electric field intensity is inversely proportional to distance, which implies that the electric field strength decreases as the distance from the electrode rise, and esters are a good replacement for insulating liquid as reliable as mineral oil.
