Fractional order PI and I controllers for grid connected wind energy conversion system

This paper presents a control of variable-speed wind energy conversion systems (WECSs) based on a permanent magnet synchronous generator connected to the grid utilizing fractional calculus. The back-to-back converter structure allows to connecting the generator and the grid. In this study, only the control of generator side converter (GSC) is considered. To control the GSC converter, two fractional order controllers are used, FOI and FOPI, the first one is used to regulate the DC link voltage and the other one is utilized to regulate the currents injected into the electric gird. The two fractional controllers were compared with two integer order controllers by IOPI using the same tuning methods to ensure a fair comparison. The results confirm the superiority of the fractional controllers over the integer controllers in terms of robustness and power quality injected to the electric grid.
