Fundamental Issue for Wind Power Systems Operating at Variable Wind Speeds: the Dependence of the Optimal Angular Speed on the Wind Speed

This work addresses a fundamental issue that arises at maximal wind energy capture: understanding the relationship between the optimal speed and wind speed. The maximum amount of wind energy is not captured by wind turbines because they are calibrated for specific meteorological conditions and mechanical demands (air density of a certain value, plastic deformations of the pallets), which are constantly changing. The dependence of the optimal mechanical angular speed on wind speed needs to be periodically recalculated in order to ensure maximum wind energy capture. This is done by determining the wind turbine's maximum given power and highlighting the wind system's energy efficiency at varying wind speeds over time. The optimal mechanical angular speed's relationship to wind speed can be calculated using experimental data. Based on experimental data from wind turbines in the Dobrogea region, the results were attained.
