Investigation of The Transmission Loss in Sand and Dust Environment Based on Longley-Rice Model

Based on the Longley-Rice model, we established a radio transmission loss model suitable for the sand and dust environment, which takes into account the correction of the complex dielectric constant and the sand and dust characteristic attenuation. The effects of electromagnetic parameters related to sand and dust environment on transmission loss are investigated in detail. The results demonstrate that an increase in sand and dust particle size and an uneven distribution will increase radios' absorption and scattering in a sand and dust environment, which will increase radios' transmission loss. Additionally, sand and dust particle density, sand volumetric moisture content, frequency, and the dust environment scale will all have a big impact on radio transmission in sand and dust environment. Thus, the results of this study can serve as a guideline to improve the quality of terrestrial radio communication.
