Three-Phase Five-Level AC/DC Stacked Multicell Converter With Reduced Switch Count

This paper proposes a three-phase five-level AC/DC Stacked Multicell Converter (SMC) with half of power switches of the conventional topology, for applications of unidirectional power flow. A Level-Shifted Phase-Disposition PWM (LSPDPWM) technique is adopted to synthesize the correct voltage levels of the converter and to guarantee almost zero average current in the flying capacitors. A dual-loop control strategy with voltage PI and current resonant PI controllers is used to guarantee the reference load voltage and almost sinusoidal grid currents. Simulation and experimental results are presented to validate the proposed converter operation. Load transients are imposed on the proposed converter to evaluate the control strategy's effectiveness.
