Two-Way Interaction (Aorta Blood-Artery) using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Simulation

CFD analysis in biomedical research can be used to develop and finetune non-invasive tools for diagnosing arterial blockages. With CFD, components of the blood flow in arteries can be analysed by solving fluid dynamics equations. CFD methods also enable development and optimisation of devices and systems for existing equipment to improve their performance and reduce costs. Therefore, research in biomedical engineering increasingly makes use of CFD methods to model circulatory systems for both human and animal subjects. This enables the collection of information on arterial behaviour that is very difficult to obtain clinically. To simulate arterial wall shear stress and the impact of the interface between pulsatile blood flow and the elastic artery wall, this paper uses two way fluid structure interaction (FSI) with the Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian method (ALE). The resultant output of this CFD analysis enables accurate simulation of the effect of hemodynamic stresses and therefore to better diagnose the risk of cardiovascular disease. This study aims examine the behaviour of the pressure waveforms as applied to a realistic, three-dimensional (3D) Aorta, using clinical data (obtained as 2D-images). The two-way FSI is performed using ANSYS 2020 R2.
