Microwave Absorbing Composites Designing

Polymer-based composites filled with highly absorbent materials combine the electrical properties of the filler with mechanical flexibility, chemical resistance and processability at the same time. By selecting materials and methods of their processing, it is possible to achieve the required properties, both electrodynamic and mechanical. The properties of the composite are also significantly affected by the size and shape of the filler particles, the volume fraction of the filler, etc. Therefore, this paper considers various types of fillers for creating absorbent polymer-based composites, namely, magnetic, metallic, carbon, and high permittivity dielectric. Their advantages and disadvantages are analyzed. It is shown that composites in which absorption is realized due to inclusions of polar dielectrics in their composition are relevant in the millimeter wavelength range. It is also possible to independently control the value of the real and imaginary parts of the effective permittivity of the composite material by changing the content of metal or ferrite particles.
