Time-varying versus Non-Foster Elements - Similarities and Differences

This paper compares synthesis of negative reactance by negative impedance converter and by time-varying element with special modulation function. It is shown that both methods can be embedded into a common theoretical framework. This unification may lead to novel active metamaterial/metasurface systems that combine frequency conversion and non-Foster behavior.
