Modeling and Control of Aggregated Temperature Control Loads for Demand Response Program

Customers’ response through Demand Response Program(DRPs) is becoming an effective alternative to manage generation–load balance by reducing load. Temperature-control loads (TCLs), being one of the most common types of flexible loads, can be a Demand-Response (DR) resource for demand-side management. The work targets Temperature Control Loads(TCLs) to be controlled under direct load control of incentive-based demand response program. As the number of such loads is huge in numbers, therefore cluster control is required. The air conditioners are divided into different clusters based on dynamically changing temperatures. Two types of control philosophy as on-off control and set-temperature control are investigated after clustering the TCLs. This work describes a modeling and control approach for aggregating large numbers of homogeneous TCLs, such as air conditioners (ACs), refrigerators, electric heaters etc. and using them for Demand Response. In the simulation, taking AC loads as the research objective, the impact of various parameters of TCLs on the power curve is shown. The effect on the load curve justifies the suitability of the techniques. The corresponding simulations and modeling were performed in MATLAB R2021b/Simulink.
