Harmonic Distortion reduction in Power System to improve Reliability and power quality

Power quality issues are caused by the extensive usage of power electronics equipment like rectifiers, inverters, etc. in power systems. One such issue is the the generation of voltage and current overtones that cause equipment heating, demand waveform deformation, overvoltage, dips, and other problems. Additionally, non-linear loads like speed controllers and SMPS exist, and UPS harmonic current production in the power system is caused by etc. They consume reactive energy components of AC mains current, therefore disrupting the supply current waveform. We must thus correct for the harmonic component in order to prevent the effects of harmonics. Shunt Active Power Filters are one of the most efficient ways to eliminate harmonics in a power system, among other methods (SAPF). In order to demonstrate why one technique is superior than another, this paper provides a detailed performance study of SAPF there under dual current management techniques, synchronous frame comparison theory and immediate current and voltage theory (p-q) (d-q). Both methods create a reference current for the filter that balances the power system's reactive power or harmonic current component. The harmonic current controller, which is utilised to provide the IGBT rectifier a corrective gating operation, so aids in the removal of harmonic components, is detailed in this study.
