A Comparative Study of IPM and WICSC Machines for Heavy Vehicle Application

The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the potential of pole-phase changing induction machines (IMs) in automotive applications. For this purpose, the comparison of a standard interior permanent magnet (IPM) synchronous machine with radial- and axial-flux IMs with wound independently controlled stator coils (WICSC) is presented for a heavy vehicle application. The optimization of the investigated machine structures is performed at three key operating points of the required torque-speed map, considering as decision criteria their output torque capability and efficiency. For the optimization of the machine designs, evolutionary multi-objective procedures are employed.
