Stator DC-excited Vernier Reluctance Machines for Aviation Starter/Generator Application

This paper proposed a stator dc-excited vernier reluctance machines (dc-VRMs) for aviation starter/generators (SG) application. Based on the flux modulation principle, this paper proposes four pole/slot combinations of dc-VRMs. The no-load characteristics and external characteristics of four models are then analyzed and compared. Besides, by analyzing the internal power factor (IPF), the poor external characteristics of dc-VRMs are explained. Moreover, in order to improve output power and external characteristics, excitation enhancement and series/parallel capacitors are proposed. Next, the analysis results are verified by finite element analysis (FEA) and the improved external characteristics curve are explained. The results show that the proposed methods can effectively improve the output power of dc-VRMs from different aspects.
