Compact UWB Cellular Antenna Integrated Into Vehicle Spoiler

A common way of integrating high frequency antennas into an automotive vehicle is a shark-fin module on the roof of the vehicle. However, increasing the size of shark-fin modules in order to accommodate a growing number of wireless communication services is undesirable from both aesthetic and aerodynamic performance points of view. The antenna integration will become more challenging as the trend of integrating more antennas and sensors continues with the emergence of autonomous vehicles. This paper proposes to integrate the antennas inside a spoiler of a vehicle to address the integration challenge and presents an integration of a cellular antenna in a rear spoiler of a vehicle. The proposed ultra wide-band (UWB) antenna operates from 617 MHz to 5 GHz supporting most of cellular bands including sub-6 GHz 5G. The antenna has a compact size of 0.14λ × 0.13λ × 0.04λ at the lowest operating frequency. The simulated results agree well with the measured results.
