Joint Wireless Positioning by Base Stations and Road Side Units for 5G Advanced

In current wireless positioning systems, the positioning accuracy may be unsatisfactory under certain scenarios where only base stations (BSs) are utilized for such tasks. To improve the positioning accuracy, this paper proposes to jointly use BSs and the road side units (RSUs) to localize target user equipments (UEs). Firstly, we establish a unified architecture for joint positioning by BSs and RSUs, which empowers harmonized transmission of positioning reference signals by both BSs and RSUs. Besides, the configuration of the sidelink positioning reference signal (SL-PRS) resource is designed for the RSU, which facilitates the improvement of positioning accuracy. Simulation results of wireless positioning with BSs and RSUs confirm that the proposed solution is effective and the positioning accuracy based on both BSs and RSUs outperforms the accuracy based on BSs only.
