Quantifying Resilience for Power Systems with Optimal Placement of PMUs to Establish a Resilient Smart Grid

Development of smart cities count on an effective wide area communication for proper monitoring and control of a system. Phasor Measurement Unit (PMUs), smart meters are installed to acquire coherent power measurements and establish a secure wide area network. Several algorithms have already been developed to accomplish an observable and feasible system. Thus to intensify the planning and operation, this methodology provides the Optimal Placement of PMUs (OPP) and suggests the best restorative strategy for multiple disruptive events. The formulated algorithm uses Bus Observability Index (BOI) and Summation of Redundancy Index (SORI) for PMU placement. It has been rigorously tested on 5-Bus test system with resilience evaluation to enhance the effectiveness of the approach. The comparative analysis between the remedial actions helps to restore the system with the best strategy in minimal time. The OPP has also been implemented on various standard IEEE bus systems and a real-time 16 bus Orissa power grid in India. It maintains the novelty with the best OPP results on implementing a simple set of rules and delivers a resilient power system with minimum PMUs in less computational time.
