PMU Data Based Phase Angle Monitoring using OSI-PI for Situational Awareness

With the development of wide-area monitoring, protection and control (WAMPAC) systems, a large number of phasor measurement units (PMUs) have been installed. These PMUs are continuously sending important information at very high rates that is very useful for maintaining the stability and reliability of the electrical grid. Due to this, situational awareness of power system has significantly improved since the PMUs are capable of providing accurate time-synchronized values of various parameters of the system. The synchrophasor data that is being collected can also be utilized to find out the phase angle difference between two remote buses of the system, which will ultimately help in identifying the system stress due to power flow variations between the two buses. This paper aims to provide insights on how can the OSIsoft PI system be used to monitor phase angles of various buses of a network implemented on a real-time hardware-in-loop (RT-HIL) system and generate alarms in case of large phase angle differences for better situational awareness of the system operators.
