Temperature effect on conservative PDIV prediction models based on Paschen’s Law

Promoting the use of speed controlled electric motors is crucial to reduce harmful greenhouse gasses in terrestrial, aerial and naval transport. Since the early 1980s, pulse width modulation (PWM) inverters have driven these electrical machines using square waveforms, but also have been identified as responsible for unexpected failures in the stator insulation system due to huge electrical stresses in turn to turn dielectric materials. Therefore, prediction models of the partial discharge inception voltage (PDIV) based on experimental measurements are being developed to anticipate these hazards during the design phase of these machines. This article is a continuation of a previous work and presents the impact of the applied voltage waveform on the PDIV and the temperature effect up to 180°C which may affect the model accuracy.
