Study of tapered multimode optical fibre performance for salinity detection

The performance of bare and tapered optical fibre for salinity detection using multimode optical fibre is observed in this paper. A simple experiment setup using light source, optical fibre, optical power meter and computer used to measure the output power of Sodium Chloride (NaCI) at various concentrations. The experiment starts by measuring the output power for bare and tapered which is −26 dBm and − 28 dBm, respectively. The sensitivity of bare optical fibre is observed at 0.0146 dBm/molarity, while tapered optical fibre is observed at 0.493 dBm/molarity. The sensitivity of sensor improves 90% using tapered optical fibre has been highlighted in this paper. In terms of linearity of a sensor at different concentrations, tapered optical fibre improved 97% compared to the bare optical fibre is observed in the end of this paper.
