Hybrid Method to Compute EM-Fields of Multi Gradient Flat Lens-Array Antenna

The flat lens antennas are compact and are easily integrated with the primary radiator. Its applications are in the domain of microwave, optics, and propagation applications. These antennas have flat boundaries and equal phases for any outgoing radiation beam. To analyze a flat lens antenna a simple hybrid method to compute fields is proposed and a systematic procedure to compute these fields is presented in this paper. To validate this hybrid method, a
$1\times 2$
rectangular patch array antenna along with a 5 layered flat lens is designed and simulated using EM Flow Solver Ansys HFSS. The
$1\times 2$
array and 5 layered lenses are fabricated and radiation characteristics are measured. The gain obtained for the 1×2 array is 10.2dB. When the 5 layered flat lens is excited with a 1×2 array, the gain of 15.2dB is observed. The flat lens antenna provides a gain improvement of 5dB. The proposed hybrid method results match closely with the simulation and measurement.
