Modeling and EMT Simulation of Renewable Energy Sources using HYPERSIM

With the rapid increase of distributed energy resources, it is essential to determine and examine its impact on the whole power network. In the RT simulation environment, plants and controllers can be analyzed before being implemented into an existing design. The article presents modeling and electromagnetic transient (EMT) studies of a system consisting of renewable energy sources in a network in an RT environment by HYPERSIM. Various studies like changes in irradiation, steady-state operation, variation in wind speed, and LLLG fault have been done in the RT simulator. As a result, grids of the future will be based on high-power electronics and distributed power systems. Proper blocks with an effective symmetry between simplification and detail are proposed to depict the nature of these components. RT blocks allow the dynamic nature of power electronics within the time frame. This work depicts the electromagnetic transient RT blocks of high-tech energy conversion systems which include photovoltaic power plants and wind power with a Type IV controller. The performance of each block has been examined using transient simulations.
