A Distributed Generation Framework using SWOT Analysis

In a restructured power system environment, the distributed generation (DG) is one of the important assets to have as it can provide improvement in voltage profile, reliability, resiliency, reduction in losses, and costs. With increased concern about the environment, the use of DGs is a sustainable way for expanding the electric power generation to match the increased demand and help in electrifying rural areas. Depletion of fossil fuels, unpredictable fuel prices, and rising environmental consciousness have contributed to the rise in demand for alternative energy sources. The SWOT framework, which includes Strengths (S), Weaknesses (W), Opportunities (O), and Threats (T) variables, is used to identify and define the drivers and barriers for DG growth on a worldwide scale. SWOT analysis is used in this research to develop a DG framework that includes renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, hydro-power, and combined heat & power (CHP).
