Comparison of 2-pole Slotted High-speed Motors with Toroidal and Tooth-coil Windings

This paper compares the electromagnetic performance between 6-slot/2-pole slotted high-speed permanent magnet (HSPM) motors with toroidal and tooth-coil windings. Both HSPM motors are optimized to achieve maximum torque by using genetic algorithm based on the finite element method accounting for thermal limitation. For the 6-slot/2-pole slotted HSPM motors with toroidal and tooth-coil windings, even though their winding factors are the same, the optimized motor with toroidal windings has higher torque, higher PM utilization, and smaller winding inductance. With any stator stack length, the toroidal windings can offer advantages of higher torque/copper loss and torque/stator iron and copper losses.
