Three-dimensional Formation Flight with Impact Vector Guidance

In this study, a guidance approach is developed for the formation flight phenomenon. This method is successful in determining any desired formation shape which is achieved by engaging in tail-chase scenarios with virtual leaders. The solution is given in two parts: kinematics of formation flight and guidance design. Impact Vector Guidance method, which was originally used to set a desired impact vector for the engagement, is modified in a way to accomplish tail-chase scenarios. The modifications on the guidance law are explained in detail and their effects are given with simulation results. Lastly, an air strike is simulated using the proposed guidance law with a leader missile and its followers.
