Process of Material Development For Unique Electrical Applications

While basic properties of discrete thermosetting materials are understood, the complexity of blending thermosetting materials is critical to achieving the required final properties of those systems. For the electrical industry, the resulting properties are key to material selection for specific applications.The goal of this paper is to provide the reader with the science behind material selections of different thermosetting systems, each with its own set of unique requirements and properties. The problem solving techniques utilized to develop three distinct material solutions will be explored in this paper. Each of these discrete resin systems required a different methodology for development, due to the unique system performance requirements. A strong knowledge of the subtle effect of mixtures on long term aging facilitates the development of new materials for unique applications. The methodologies can be applied to a broad spectrum of applications, such as oil & gas, rotating equipment, cables, transformers and batteries.
