Binary-Input Ternary-Output Turbo Codes for Ternary PSK Transmission

Ternary phase shift keying (TPSK) is one of the potential transmission schemes with spectral efficiency higher than
$\pi / 2$
-shift BPSK adopted by the fifth generation (5G) mobile communications for long-distance communications, while retaining lower peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) signal property compared to QPSK. However, its application to practical systems is challenging as the conventional coding and modulation schemes are not designed for ternary signaling. In this work, we first introduce a phase shifting approach for TPSK in order to effectively reduce the PAPR in the framework of OFDM with DFT-precoding. We then propose a design of binary-input ternary-output (BITO) turbo codes that match with TPSK signaling. Through computer simulations, we demonstrate its superior error rate performance, and elucidate its advantages over the conventional PSK systems.
