Performance Analysis of a Dynamic Voltage Restorer using two Compensation Strategies for Voltage Sag Mitigation

Voltage sag is one of the most typical distribution system issues. The dynamic voltage restorer (DVR) is a commonly used device for voltage sag mitigation. This paper compares the performance of a DVR using two compensation strategies for voltage sag mitigation. The two compensation strategies considered are the pre-sag and the minimum energy compensation strategies. Both compensation strategies were implemented using the proportional-resonant (PR) controller. The simulation and analytical performance of the DVR implementing the two compensation strategies were carried out in MATLAB/Simulink for various voltage sags depths. The obtained results show that a minimum energy compensation strategy can mitigate voltage sags of longer durations.
