Optimized Inter Prediction Algorithm of High Efficiency Video Coding Based on Region of Interest

Aiming at the high complexity of inter prediction algorithm in the ITU-T H.265/high efficiency video coding (HEVC) standard, an optimized inter prediction algorithm of ITU-T H.265/HEVC based on region of interest (ROI) is proposed. Firstly, the proposed algorithm divides current frame into region of interest and region of non-interest (RONI) based on the idea of edge detection; Then, the fast partitioning algorithm proposed of coding unit (CU) is adopted to skip unnecessary partitioning process of CU based on ROI according to spatial-temporal correlation; Finally, the fast selection algorithm proposed of prediction unit (PU) is adopted to terminate the traversal of PU mode in advance based on ROI in the phase of inter prediction, which reduces the unnecessary calculation load of rate-distortion cost, and achieving the purpose of reducing coding complexity and saving coding time. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can reduce coding time by 47.92% on average when the loss of peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) is only 0.0396dB, therefore, the research in this paper can reduce the complexity of inter prediction algorithm further, which is conducive to the subsequent research on the optimization of High Efficiency Video Coding algorithms.
