Driver's Reaction Time Model for Braking Safety of Electric Vehicle Based on Fuzzy Logic

Regenerative braking is an effective way to improve the utilization of battery energy of electric vehicles (EVs), but the strength of regenerative braking is relatively weak compared with the mechanical braking, thus, the braking strategy must firstly ensure the braking safety distance, in other words, EV must stop completely within a certain braking distance at a certain speed. The effect of road friction, braking force intensity, and the driver’s reaction time on the safe braking distance should be conducted simultaneously. In this paper, a driver’s reaction time model based on fuzzy logic is proposed, which specifically analyzes the impact of different driving years, ages, and fatigue levels on the driver’s reaction time. The results show that the driver’s reaction time have a great effect on the braking distance, which is useful for the formulation of a regenerative braking strategy of EVs and autonomous driving vehicles.
