Rectangular Patch Coupled with Novel Perturbing Structures for Improved Radiations: Physical Insight for Choosing the Appropriate Shape

This work explores some interesting design possibilities of a recently investigated microstrip design. It uses a pair of shaped metallic pins attached to the ground and coupled to the patch electromagnetically. Two types of structural arrangements have been considered. Related analysis and physical insight have been developed with the help of a systematic studies based on the simulated data. Subsequent experiments have been followed with a set of fabricated prototypes and the results have been thoroughly compared. More than 10dB reduction in the cross-polarized fields has been ensured along with indicating a significant reduction in backside radiation ranging up to 10dB. The proposed antenna is truly promising for practical applications where antenna front has sufficient space (~0.11λ) to accommodate the extended metallic structures.
