A novel method of Power Factor Correction with Reinforced Controller under sag/swell condition

The passive Power Factor Correction has major drawbacks in handling the power quality problems at the source side. The active Power Factor Correction is the best alternative for maintaining power quality despite exposure to power quality problems. The active PFCs provide a reduction in the THD level of the source current and simultaneously improve the power factor. The IEC 6000-3-2 and IEEE-519 standards set the limitations for power quality maintenance. The DC-DC Boost converter used for the active PFC provides a higher voltage gain with the reduction in ripple factor. The converter controller has been enhanced by the replacement of the mathematically modelled controllers with reinforced Artificial Neural Network controllers. The controller characteristics have been analyzed by modelling the proposed system in a MATLAB-Simulink environment. The system was also exposed to voltage-oriented problems like sag/swell. The Boost converter active PFC along with ANN controller proves to provide voltage regulation even during sag/swell conditions as per IEEE-1159 standards.
