Power System Stability Augmentation with Flywheel Energy Storage and DFIG Kinetic Energy

In this paper, a smaller scale flywheel energy storage along with the transient frequency support capability of doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) based wind turbines (WT) are exploited for dynamic response augmentation of multi-area power system. A detailed mathematical model of flywheel energy storage system (FESS), comprehending the dynamics of flywheel disc, associated electric machine and the power electronic interface is delineated. For governing the operation of FESS profitably, a comprehensive step-ahead discrete-time predictive control (SDPC) is developed in a succinct manner, addressing not only the power constraints of power electronic interface but also the energy level constraints of flywheel disc. The persuasiveness of the proposed scheme is manifested by time-domain simulation results, performed on a three-area power system.
