Multiphase Induction Motor with Different Speed Ratio for Gearless Electric vehicles

One of the desired features for the selection of the motor for Electric Vehicle is the wide torque and speed. This can be achieved using Pole Phase Modulation technique, which is used in Multiphase Induction motor without disturbing the operation. Using Pole Phase Modulated Multiphase Induction Motor the weight of EVs can be reduced and it omits the use of gears. Since it’s multiphase motor it posses advantages such as fault tolerant operation, reduced power rating of switches and reduced harmonics. The general design rule specifies only certain pole-phase combinations can be achieved. for PPMIM. In this paper a 15-phase PPMIM which can operate in three different speed ratios is modelled using the mathematical equations. Based on the excitation given by inverter, the combinations possible are 15-phase 4-pole, 5-phasel2-pole and 3-phase 20-pole. The proposed drive is equivalent to the gear mechanism in conventional vehicle, thereby the gearless operation with reduction in size and weight can be achieved.
