Establishment and Application of V-I and R-I Characteristic Equations of MOV

Metal oxide varistor (MOV) has been widely used in power equipment to prevent the damage of overvoltage or overcurrent due to its excellent nonlinear characteristics. However, how to clearly describe the nonlinear characteristics of MOV has always been difficulties in the research of MOV. The equation suitable for describing the nonlinear characteristic of MOV and a method for measuring the parameters of the equation are presented in this paper. The characteristic equation can correctly express the actual characteristics of MOV within the range of $2\sim 3$ orders of magnitude of current peak value change. In this paper, the measurement method of V-I and R-I characteristic equations of MOV is given by experiment. By comparing the voltage calculated by the equations with the measured value, the deviation is less than 3%, which proves the validity of the proposed characteristic equation. In addition, this paper introduces the application occasions and methods of the proposed characteristic equation.
