A Multi-functional Polarization Reconfigurable Metasurface for C-band Applications

A reconfigurable polarization metasurface (MSF) is presented that uses pin diodes to convert the linearly polarized (LP) incident wave into a reflected wave with either linear polarization in the perpendicular orientation or with circular polarization. The multi-functional behavior occurs in the wide frequency range of 4.45–5.50 GHz and it is based on the response of the novel dumbbell shaped unit cell which is loaded with a parallel combination of a PIN diode with a 0.15 pF capacitor. The MSF presents polarization conversion ratio (PCR) better than 90% and axial ratio (AR) better than 3 dB in C-band frequencies.
