Design and Modeling of a 77 GHz Time-Modulated Transmitter Array for Enhanced Backoff Efficiency

This paper presents a time-modulated array architecture for enhanced power backoff efficiency. This technique can be combined with conventional power backoff enhancement methods such as Doherty amplifiers. With the proposed time-modulated array PBO technique, we demonstrate in simulation a power drain efficiency enhancement of 70% times larger compared with a typical class A/B amplifier operating at 77 GHz at −3dB backoff region and 90% times larger at −6dB backoff region.
