A LC Voltage Equalization Methodology to Enable Balancing of Li-ion Cells Connected in Series

A Li-ion cells are rechargeable batteries, commonly used in portable electronics as well as electric vehicles. The electric transportation will represent 35% of the world's vehicles by 2040 due to its potential to reduce the Greenhouse gases (GHG) concentration in the atmosphere by 65%. Electric vehicles have received considerable attention as a valid alternative to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. However, a BMS with balancing of Li-Ion batteries as well as individual cell monitoring in EV applications, there are still significant problems. The effective cell balancing as well as monitoring techniques are necessary to extend the battery life along with protection. The development of an LC voltage equalization mechanism is discussed in this paper for maintaining equal voltage across each cell connected in series in the battery pack. The developed control procedure manages the entire processes of battery cell balancing, charging, discharging and monitoring respectively.
