Investigations on losses and temperature rise in PMAC machines with distributed and concentrated windings and different rotor locations

This paper presents investigations on different types of losses and their effects in different Permanent Magnet AC (PMAC) machines. Here, machines with different configurations have been considered, viz. Surface Permanent Magnet (SPM) and Interior Permanent Magnet (IPM) machines with both distributed and concentrated windings and with inner and outer rotors. The losses and temperature rise in various parts of the machines have been evaluated using standard Finite Element Method (FEM) software. The temperature rise has also been verified experimentally for different laboratory prototype PMAC machines. Furthermore, the effect of temperature rise of PMs on the induced emf of the machines has also been obtained experimentally. The effect of type of windings on the general performance, losses and temperature rise of the PM have also been discussed here. The FEM simulation results and experimental results are found to be in excellent agreement.
