Perceiving the World with Pervasive Wireless Communication Infrastructures

The continuous increase of communication bandwidths and antennas has enabled sensing in wireless communication systems. However, the current wireless protocols has not designed with sensing considerations, which have significantly limited the achievable accuracy and performance in current wireless sensing systems. This paper presents a new approach for realizing the vision of omnipresent sensing with pervasive wireless infrastructures. We also highlight the massive opportunities that can be provided by co-designing sensing and communication functions in future wireless devices. We finally present some of the exciting open problems toward this vision.
