Impact of Mechanical Characteristics of Blades on Ceiling Fan Performance and its Validation

This paper presents a method for estimating the output torque of ceiling fan motors. For measurement of output torque of the motor, torque transducers is used for measurement without any modifications to the ceiling fan assembly. A test platform equipped with a reaction type load cell mounted on a shaft connected to signal processing circuitry for measuring the shaft torque is used. The validity of the change in theoretical behavior of the performance due to change in pitch is observed in the obtained results. Test results are used to analyze the shaft torque ripple, motor shaft power, and the impact of the blades on the motor performance, assessed from the torque-speed curves. These torque-speed curves are motor and blade specific and can be further used to predict ceiling fan performance under different loading conditions.
