Spatial Modulation: Challenges and Potential Solutions

The presented paper offers a comprehensive study of Spatial Modulation (SM) for future wireless MIMO technologies, encompassing the precursors of SM up to the state-of-the-art developments in SM. Basically, SM-MIMO foresees the transmission of two information streams; wherein a chunk of symbol-bits is transmitted using the conventional QAM/PSK and the residual chunk is transmitted implicitly with the aid of the constellation array point of a particular transmit antenna. The typical system arrangement for SM and spatial constellation diagram is elucidated. Performance analysis of SM techniques is discussed with theoretical research data numerals. The Advantages and disadvantages of SM-MIMO are further discussed. This survey article is proposed to offer a survey on the challenges faced in the state of affairs of SM-MIMO research and implementation; with potential solutions posited in the successive chapter.
