1U CubeSat ASEANSAT Electrical Power Subsystem Design Review

ASEANSAT is the first collaborative project within the ASEAN nation involving Malaysia and the Philippines. Malaysia is presented by Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) and the Philippines is presented by the University of Perpetual Help System Delta (UPHSD). The main objective of the ASEANSAT project is to expose the implementation of lean satellite applications for research and development purposes. ASEANSAT CubeSat is a 1U CubeSat that consists of similar subsystems based on previous BIRDS CubeSat. The subsystems are the On-Board Computer (OBC), Attitude and Determination Control (ADCS), Communication (COM), and Electrical Power Subsystem (EPS). ASEANSAT CubeSat only focuses on the camera mission and store and forward mission. This paper describes the overview of the Electrical Power Subsystem (EPS) that will be installed in the ASEANSAT CubeSat. The ASEANSAT EPS harvests energy through five sides of solar panels, stores it into rechargeable batteries, and distributes it to the subsystems and missions. The solar panels are capable of producing an energy range between 2417.61 mW to 4187.4 mW. The energy received is dependable on the amount of solar panels side that received sunlight. For storing the excess power generated by the solar panel, six cells of Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH) with 1.2V and 2000 mAh storage capacity are proposed. This paper explains the proposed design system for the EPS subsystem that will be installed in ASEANSAT CubeSat.
